Back in July we spent a weekend camping at Meditation Point on Timothy Lake. This peaceful spot provided camp sites on the water, but removed us from the busier drive-in style camping on the other side of the lake. We hiked in about 1 mile with our gear, set up our camp site and relaxed for the evening. The next morning we tackled the 12 mile loop around the lake, a very flat walkable route that can be accomplished in 4-5 hours. The lake is a very popular destination for Oregon campers, so be prepared for camp sites to fill up by Friday afternoon.
The hike itself follows the outline of the lake, where at one point you join up with the Pacific Crest Trail on the east side. It's a great hike for a hot summer day; there are plenty of opportunities to jump in and cool off along the way.
To get there: take U.S. Highway 26 toward Mt. Hood. Take the turnoff between mileposts 65 and 66, you will see a sign for Timothy Lake. Take Road 42 for four miles then turn right on to Abbott Road for 1.4 miles to Little Crater Campground.
Cheers!
