Jefferson Park from Whitewater Trailhead

This is a hike we did in October (you will notice the beautiful fall colors), one that I've been meaning to write about for months. Following a fun filled wedding weekend in Bend, Oregon, Mike, Val & I decided to hit this hike on our way back to Portland. Take Highway 22 to Highway 46, follow 46 for 10 miles then take a right on 4685 for 6 miles to the trailhead.

A little about this hike, it is 12.4-13 miles depending on who you ask, we clocked in closer to 13. The first 2 miles include steady inclines and dense forest. You emerge at one point and there is a valley view that makes you appreciate the elevation gain you've achieved. Keep on trucking upward and you will eventually hit a bend where Mt. Jefferson is like "BAM! In yo' face." Being the second tallest mountain in Oregon, it is sometimes overshadowed by Mt. Hood. But not on this hike.

As far as congestion, you will see the occasional outdoor enthusiast, but for the most part the difficulty and length of the hike deters many folk. Once you reach Jefferson Park and the PCT, there are tons of small alpine lakes to explore. This hike is definitely a backpacking trip worth tacking on to the list and certainly one we will visit again. As always, enjoy the pictures!
